Information about the products

BOTOX® (Botulinum Toxin Type A) was first introduced in 1989 as a treatment for eyelid and eye muscle disorders. It was FDA approved for cosmetic use to reduce the severity of frown lines around the eyes in 2002 and has since become perhaps the most popular cosmetic procedure performed in the United States. Because it was initially introduced for use in the field of ophthalmology, ophthalmic surgeons benefit from the longest experience using the product. Botox® is typically used for the wrinkles of the upper face and forehead.

Most frown lines on the face form as a result of muscle activity below the surface. The skin follows the contours of the underlying muscles. Botox® is injected into specific facial muscles and has the effect of relaxing the contraction of those muscles. By smoothing out the tone of the muscles, the overlying skin is also smoothed and wrinkle lines are dramatically reduced. The effects typically last at least 3 months, often longer. While the procedure is very safe and effective, there is a rare risk of side effects which include bruising at the injection site that lasts several days, eyelid drooping (ptosis) that can last several weeks, nausea, and flu-like symptoms.

JUVEDERM™ is a smooth consistency clear gel made of hyaluronic acid (a naturally occurring substance in your skin) that helps to add volume and hydration to deeper wrinkles. Over time, the natural volume of youthful skin begins to diminish as wrinkles and folds form. Juvederm™ is injected just below the skin surface into these folds to restore a more natural, youthful, appearance. Juvederm™ maintains its shape using the body’s own moisture and therefore resists degradation. The hyaluronic acid in Juvederm™ is hydrophilic or "water loving." As hyaluronic acid gradually degrades, each molecule binds to more water and over time, the same volume can be maintained with less hyaluronic acid. The ability of Juvederm™ to bind to water is what helps provide its long-lasting results. The effect of Juvederm™ typically lasts at least 6 months, the longest of the commercially available dermal fillers. While the procedure is very safe and effective, there is a rare risk of side effects which include bruising at the injection site that lasts several days and the feel of small nodules below the skin surface. Juvederm™ is typically used for the folds and wrinkles of the lower face (those emanating from the corners of the nose and the corners of the mouth), deep frown lines of the upper face, as well as to enhance the fullness of the lips.

Botox® and Juvederm™ are often used together to enhance each other and maximize the desired overall effect of restoring a more youthful and well-rested appearance to the face.
